Local Councillor Gill Slocombe opened the latest public forum hosted by Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Sue Mountstevens, Assistant Chief Constable Stephen Cullen and local Chief Inspector Lisa Simpson.

Residents from Bridgwater and Taunton packed into the YMCA, Friarn Avenue on Wednesday evening (September 19). Having their say on policing issues, local residents were given the opportunity to share their concerns. Those who attended put questions to the PCC, Assistant Chief Constable and Chief Inspector on the subjects of tackling drugs, including issues with county lines, policing presence in rural areas and anti-social behaviour.

Following Cllr Slocombe’s opening introductions; the panel of speakers each gave a short presentation to attendees, before opening up the meeting inviting questions from the audience.

Speaking after the forum PCC Sue Mountstevens said: “It is always important to have honest and open discussions about policing with local people in order to ensure that residents of Avon and Somerset feel safe and are safe.

“The local policing issues raised at the forum have been well and truly heard. We are working together as a part of the Safer Somerset Partnership to continue to build safer and stronger communities.”

“It’s clear that the residents who take the time to attend our public forums care about their communities and want to make a positive change. Thank you for attending our forum and for taking the time to listen to the Assistant Chief Constable and I.”

Following the forum, audience members were then invited to speak to local neighbourhood officers about specific issues they may have.

The meeting was streamed on Facebook live and can be found online at Avon and Somerset PCC, where you can also view the presentations given on the evening. Notes taken from the question and answer session will be published shortly.

The next public forum will take place on Tuesday, December 4 in Nailsea. A venue will be confirmed in due course.
