The price of carrier bags is set to rise to 10p, from the current 5p, and will be applied to all shops, not just those with 250 or more employees.

It is reported by the top 7 supermarkets, that sales of carrier bags have dropped by 86% since the charge was first introduced, 3 years ago.

Donations from the carrier bags have always come into question, with some supermarkets being reported as keeping some of the money, but the reported amount is set at £58.5 million.

Among other ideas discussed by ministers is the deposit on glass bottles, though this is not new as it was a common occurrence up until the 1980s.
